Behind the scenes of Attack the Block

Attack the Block, from the producers of Shaun of the Dead, is a film about a group of teens in south London having to defend their block from an alien invasion. The producers hired Stockholm based studio Fido to do the special effects used in the movie, and they talked about that process.

The biggest amount of work as far as VFX goes were the creatures. While they were costumes at the start, they looked too harmless, so the jaws were redone in 3D to be more impressive and provide lighting effects. The fur was also increased with spikes in post-production.

The mouth was made using MudBox and ZBrush, and had 24 million polygons. The finished shot mixed costumes with special effects. The rest of the movie included some explosions and other effects, with the rest being traditional filming. Attack the Block comes out this week on DVD and Blu-ray.
