Toshiba announces highest resolution tablet display

In the race for tablet and smartphone displays, Toshiba Mobile Display Ltd may have just taken the lead. The company announced this week a new 6.1'' LCD providing a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, giving it a 498 pixels-per-inch (PPI).

In comparison, the iPhone 4S retina display is 960 x 640, giving it 329 PPI. Typically, this high resolution is only seen in computer monitors, but now Toshiba may have brought up the bar as to what's possible in small screens. There's no hint yet as to when we'll see this technology inside an actual tablet, but the new display will be shown off this week at an exhibition in Pacifico Yokohama.
